Martin J. ‘Rusty’ May

Martin J. May, or “Rusty,” 85, of Vero Beach, Fla. passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at his home.

Mr. May was born October 14, 1927, in Brooklyn. He had been a resident of Vero Beach since 1986, coming from Fort Lauderdale. Before moving to Florida he lived in Carmel, NY, and had founded the Carmel Youth Association in 1973.

He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

Prior to his retirement he worked as a linesman & telephone engineer for AT&T and Bellsouth for 35 years.

He attended St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach. Martin was an avid volunteer for the Vero Beach Recreational Department, where he was heavily involved with the youth football program.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Anna May; sons, Martin May of Sherman, Ct.; Michael May of Poughkeepsie; Brian May of Miami; daughter, Maureen Christie of Wingdale; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Danielle May.

A vigil service was held at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, May 22, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, May 23, at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to St. John of the Cross at 7550 26th St Vero Beach, FL 32966.
