David B. Cunningham
David B. Cunningham, 95, a life-long resident of Pawling, passed away Friday, January 3, 2014, at Putnam Hospital Center, Carmel.
Born in Pawling on August 29, 1918, he was one of two sons born to John D. and Johanna (Bjoursen) Cunningham. His brother Francis died in 1990.
While in Pawling High School, Dave ran cross country and played basketball.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a Staff Sergeant during W.W. II.
Dave married “the love of his life,” Helen Horn, on November 17, 1945, at the Pawling Central Baptist Church; Helen predeceased him on May 2, 2008.
Dave was a rural letter carrier for the Pawling Post Office for many years, finally retiring in 1975. During his life he worked for a number of businesses in the community: as a child, he pumped the organ for the Pawling Methodist Church, he drove the school bus and taxi for Sheridan’s Taxi, he plowed roads for the Town of Pawling, he also worked for his father-in-law at the John W. Horn Funeral Home, which would later become the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home.
He was a Life Member of the Pawling Fire Department, serving his community and surrounding areas for 74 years; Dave was a 3rd generation fireman and his daughter and grandson were 4th and 5th. He was a member of the Hasler-Kamp Post American Legion, Akin Hall Association, and Christ Church; Past Master of Pawling Grange #831; Past President of the Pawling PTA and the Pawling Investment Club, creating the school banking program; board member and docent of the Quaker Hill and Pawling Historical Society; and former Scout Master of Troop #34.
Dave is survived by his son Ashley Cunningham of Winthrop,
NY and his daughter Sharon Turner and her husband, Bill, of Pawling; grandson Jared Turner and his wife Kathryn, and great-grandson Chase, grandson Bryan Turner and his wife, Erica, and granddaughter Grace Glokey and her husband Jake.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Helen, and brother, Francis, he is also predeceased by his sister-in-law, Alma.
Visitation was Tuesday, January 7th from 3-5 and 7-9 PM at the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling. The Pawling Fire Department held a service at 7 PM and the American Legion at 7:15 PM. A funeral service was conducted on Wednesday at 11 AM at Christ Church, Quaker Hill, Pawling; burial will follow in Quaker Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave’s memory may be made to the Pawling Fire Department or Christ Church.
