School Delays for Wednesday

Bitter cold as roads are cleaned
Eric Gross

Putnam might have escaped Mother Nature’s fury overnight with a modest four inch snowfall as compared to its neighbors in lower Westchester which received upwards of a foot of snow, yet area schools have delayed opening again in order to allow road crews to plow, salt and sand highways before school buses begin their daily pick-ups.

All six public school districts in Putnam—Brewster, Carmel, Garrison, Haldane, Mahopac and Putnam Valley—will be opening two hours late this morning while the North Salem, Lakeland, Yorktown and Putnam-Northern Westchester BOCES campuses will open three hours later than normal.

The Pawling District is on a two hour delay along with the Hudson Valley Christian Academy in Mahopac Falls, St. James School in Carmel, St. Lawrence O’Toole School in Brewster as well as the Ark and Dove Pre-School in Stormville. The Holy Communion School in Mahopac will have no morning session today.

The Putnam Office for the Aging Nutrition sites and Adult Day Care Program will not be operating today due to the inclement weather.

Police are reminding those whose vehicles were left out-of-doors overnight to be prepared for considerable icing on windshields: “It’s going to take a good 10 minutes with the motor running to defrost that windshield this morning,” said a Carmel PD dispatcher.

Early morning temperatures are hovering around zero in most sections of the region with primary as well as secondary roads covered with snow and ice.

Think spring—it officially begins two months from today!

Earlier story from Tuesday:

The region’s latest winter blast from Mother Nature has forced many schools to announce early dismissals today.

Snow has been forecast to begin falling prior to noon and continue throughout the day and evening before ending sometime tomorrow morning with accumulations ranging from four to six inches.

Due to the inclement weather the Carmel, Garrison, Haldane, Mahopac, Putnam Valley, North Salem, Lakeland and Pawling districts will dismiss students early today while the John F. Kennedy High School in Somers has cancelled classes for the day.

Other schools dismissing early include: Hudson Valley Christian Academy in Mahopac Falls, St. James School in Carmel, Putnam ARC, Putnam Head Start in Brewster and the Therapeutic Equestrian Center in Cold Spring.

The Putnam Office for the Aging Nutrition sites will not open today nor will the Office for the Aging Adult Day Care Centers.
