John B. ‘Barrett’ Hickman

John B. “Barrett” Hickman, a resident of Largo, FL, died Saturday April 8, 2017, at his home. He was 60 years old.

John was born on November 30, 1956, in Ithaca, NY to S. Barrett Hickman and Ruth Hewitt Hickman while S. Barrett Hickman was attending Cornell Law School. John was a resident of Mahopac, New York during his childhood and attended Mahopac Falls Elementary School and Mahopac High School for one year until transferring to Kent School in Kent, CT. He was a graduate of Kent School, Hamilton College and Fordham University Law School.

He worked for several companies throughout his career in commercial real estate including Barnes & Noble, Sony IMAX Theatres, Federal Realty and operated Merchants Realty LLC until shortly before his death.

Growing up on Lake Mahopac, John learned to waterski and loved to slalom. His most famous boating experience was when he went down to the lake to start the family CorrectCraft, only to have it promptly explode. He escaped with nothing more than a few singed hairs. The legal settlement bought him his first car, a Chevy Nova with a Hearst Shift. John was known for his love of reading, his Labrador Retrievers (Brax, Buck #1 and Buck #2) and beaches. Over the years, he drove several Jeeps and many Porsches, always with great abandon.

He is survived by his sister, Diane H. MacKnight of Arlington, VA, his brother S. Bruce Hickman of Hopkinton, MA, and his sister Deborah H. Santini of Carmel, NY as well as three nephews and three nieces and his aunt, Mrs. Betty Lates of Holmes, NY. He was predeceased by his parents, the Honorable S. Barrett Hickman (2007) and Ruth Hewitt Hickman (1987).
