Carol E. Macomber

October 27, 1927 – November 7, 2021

Carol E. Macomber, age 94, a lifelong resident of Brewster, NY passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at Putnam Ridge Nursing Home in Brewster, NY.

Carol was born on October 27, 1927, in Brewster, NY to Carl O. and Edna (O’Hara) Ekstrom. She graduated from Brewster High School in 1945. One year later, on August 17, 1946, Carol married the love of her life, William (Bill) A. Macomber, at the First United Methodist Church of Brewster. Carol later went on to graduate from White Plains Hospital School of Nursing in 1951.

In her young life, Carol was a nurse at White Plains Hospital. She later found her passion working in education. Carol worked for the Brewster school system from 1972 until her retirement in 1996. While working there she filled many roles from lunchroom aide, to teacher’s aide, and even recess aide, but her favorite and most memorable position was Library Aide at Garden Street School. Carol also ‘kept the books’ for her husband’s business, Bill’s Refrigeration, through the years.

Throughout her life, Carol was a committed member of the First Methodist Church of Brewster, an avid reader, a dedicated fan of the UCONN Women’s Basketball Team, and a lover of travel, all passions she shared with her husband, Bill. The two of them travelled to every state, shy of Hawaii, together prior to his passing on February 23, 2017. Carol also took great pride in her knitting. She started by knitting hats and mittens for her children, but later expanded her skills to be able to knit sweaters for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Carol is survived by her four children, Dawn Macomber and Star Auer, both of Danbury, CT; Carl E. Macomber (Fran) of Brewster, NY; and Kyle D. Macomber (Lori) of New Fairfield, CT. Nine grandchildren, Douglas Macomber, Candice Boyle, Kelly Scofield, Kristi Upton, Chad Auer, Brittany Macomber, Carl Macomber Jr., Kathryn Herbert, and Second Lieutenant Kyle Macomber Jr., USA. Ten great grandchildren, Xander, Mackenzie, Elizabeth, Joshua, Mary Kate, Julia, Matthew, Molly, Autumn, and Landon. And her brother-in-law Joseph Reinhardt. Carol was pre-deceased by her sons Jon Macomber in 2010 and William A. Macomber Jr. in 2016, her son-in-law Timothy Auer in 2017, and her sisters Patricia Doyle, Eloise Reinhardt, Jean Saunders, and Joyce and Gloria Ekstrom.

Friends called at the funeral home on Friday November 12 from 4 to 8pm. And a funeral service was held on Saturday November 13, 2021, 10am at Beecher Funeral Home.
