Catherine McManus (nee Tobin), age 93, of Carmel, New York, and formerly of the Bronx and County Clare, Ireland, passed away at Putnam Hospital Center on January 29, 2021.
The beloved matriarch of our family, Catherine is survived by her sons and daughter-in-laws: Margaret McManus of Hopewell Junction NY; Brian and Kathleen McManus of Carmel NY; Sean and Patricia McManus of Berwyn PA; Kevin and Janine McManus of Daniels Island SC; and Paul and Myriam McManus of the Bronx NY. She was the proud grandmother of 13 grandchildren: Katie, Megan, Michael, Liam, Ashley, Kacie, Lauren, Jillian, Martin, William, Benjamin, Kevin “KJ”, and John Anthony – all of whom affectionately called her Nana or “the Nan”.
Catherine is also survived by her sister Margaret Jones of Spring Lake NJ, and multiple loved ones throughout the U.S., Ireland, and England. She was pre-deceased by her devoted husband Martin McManus; her loving son Thomas Joseph “TJ” McManus; and her siblings John Tobin, William Tobin, Mary Rodgers, and Nora “Nonie” McNamara, all of County Clare, Ireland.
Catherine was born February 12, 1927, in the small farming village of Bodyke, County Clare, Ireland. She emigrated with her sister Margaret to the U.S. in 1949. She met the love of her life, Martin McManus, a spry Irishman from County Leitrim, at a dance in Manhattan, NY. They married on September 12, 1953, at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Manhattan. They lived in the Morris Park section of the Bronx until 1969, when they became full-time residents in Carmel, NY.
Catherine was a 1973 graduate of the BOCES LPN program. A caretaker to her core, Catherine spent nearly 30 years caring for members of this community in local nursing homes, at Putnam Hospital Center, and eventually as a private duty nurse.
Catherine was a charter member of the Emerald Association of Putnam County. She was also a devoted parishioner of St. James the Apostle Parish in Carmel NY, and a member of their Prayer Group and Seniors Group.
Catherine was known for her homemade cookies, cheesecake, and her Irish soda bread. But don’t let the sweet Nana exterior fool you! She was a practical joker and was quick with quips and one-liners. She was undoubtedly an amazing woman and will be missed by all.
