Donald L. Cassidy of Carmel, NY., passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on February 15, 2021.
He was born May 20, 1930, in Boston, Massachusetts to Edward and Elizabeth Viola Philpott Cassidy.
November 14, 1961, he married the former Mary Lou Stolts in Jamaica, New York and they lived in Newfoundland for a period of time. Mr Cassidy retired from the U.S. Navy in 1967 after 20 years of service. The couple moved to Carmel in 1968.
Mr. Cassidy established the Respiratory Therapy Department at the Putnam Hospital Center in 1970. He was President of the Mid- Hudson Lung Association for several years, and President of the Home Care Council in Carmel for 5 years, as well as being on the Board of Directors for several years. He was actively involved with many civic organizations and programs. Mr. Cassidy was a Realtor in the Putnam County area and served as the Vice President of the Putnam County Association of Realtors.
In addition to having a passion for community service Mr. Cassidy had a love of ice cream, Chinese food, pizza, and of course we cannot forget lobster and mussels. He thoroughly enjoyed McDonald’s famous apple pies, and a good oldfashioned homemade country breakfast. In his younger days Mr. Cassidy was an amateur cigar aficionado.
In addition to his wife, Mary Lou, survivors include three children, Bridget L. (Jeffrey) Kessman of Patterson, New York, Matthew of Newburgh, New York, Paul of Carmel, New York, and three grandchildren, Brian Kessman, Amanda Kessman, and Allen Kessman, and one great grandchild Bennett Patrick Kessman.
A memorial to Honor and Celebrate Donald L. Cassidy’s life will held at a later date with U.S. Navy Military Honors.
