Doris Lorraine Tunison Cornell, a retired nurse from Putnam Hospital Center, died September 25, 2020 at home is East Stroudsburg, PA.
Although her given name was Doris, her family and close friends referred to her as Lorraine. She was born at home in Manhattan, NY to Austin and Dorothy Tunison on April 15, 1926. Lorraine attended St. Luke’s School of Nursing. She worked in Miami, NYC Public Health and at Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel.
On July 15, 1950 she married Stig John Cornell, Sr. at Christ Church in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The couple moved to Mahopac in 1957, settling in Carmel three years later. They moved to Florida in 1993 and summered in Lakehurst, NJ. Lorraine moved to Stroudsburg, PA in December 2013.
Lorraine became a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Brewster, NY in 1957. She was active in WELCA and the alter guild. Lorraine loved to travel, play bocce, shuffleboard, pinochle and mah jongg. She appreciated nature and was an avid birder, she volunteered at Long Beach Island Nature Center in NJ, and with the Historical Society at the Florida State Fair. She attributed her health to being active with gardening, walking and practicing Tai Chi. Lorraine also enjoyed playing the organ and painting.
Lorraine was predeceased by her husband, Stig, and her brothers Richard and William Tunison. She is survived by her children Stig J. Cornell, Jr., Karin Schembari and Doris O’Toole and their spouses Nancy, Paul and George, Jr., her five grandchildren: Christopher, Sofia, Rosa, Dillon, and Tyler and her sister, Janet Riordan.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date during interment at Raymond Hill Cemetery in Carmel, NY.
