Edward E. (Big Ed) Stark, age 96, passed away peacefully at his home in Heritage Hills, Somers on September 1. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years Florence (Pete) Stark, who died in 2007.
Born in Flushing, New York on August 17, 1922, Ed was the son of Henry and Amelia Stark. He attended college at Texas A&M University and the State University of New York in Oswego, earning a degree in Industrial Arts Education. In later years he attended New York University in New York City in the evenings to pursue a master’s degree. Ed was a WWII Veteran serving honorably in the nascent Army Air Corps. He was an educator for over 30 years at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, where he taught Mechanical Drawing, Shop and Consumer Economics. Ed was particularly proud of being the class advisor for the Class of 1963, creating cherished friendships for the duration of his life.
He was a lifelong member of Boy Scout Troop 1, Flushing, and an enthusiastic regular at the annual Old-Timers dinner. He founded Roll N Roam in 1953, a summer camping trip across the United States for teenagers, where he shared his passion for travel, the outdoors, and the National and State Parks. Ed had a true gift for maintaining friendships and despite complaining of a busy social schedule, loved to stay in touch with those he cared for.
He is survived by his four children Donald, Meredith, Douglas and Daniel; seven grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren. Ed’s brother Harold died in 1993.
A memorial service will be held later this fall. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Big Ed’s favorite charity, The Salvation Army.
