On Monday, March 8, 2021, Eleanor La Cigale (Spangler) McNair passed on at the age of 94 at Danbury Hospital after a brief illness.
Eleanor, known as “Petie” to all that knew her, was born on December 9, 1926, in Parsons, West Virginia to the late Delphia Ellen (Hedrick) & Louis Ellsworth Spangler. She graduated from Parsons High School in 1945 and earned her bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV.
On August 28, 1949, she married the love of her life, Lieutenant Donald Ray McNair at St. John’s Methodist Church in Parsons. At the time Don was a pilot in the United States Air Force, so the couple was constantly moving between multiple duty stations. In 1956, after leaving their military service, they settled in North Salem, NY. There they owned and operated June Farm Nursery for 22 years while raising their five children. In 1980, they moved from North Salem to Connecticut, living in Danbury, Woodbury, and Bethel. Later in life, Petie changed careers to become a CNA and worked for Candlewood Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in New Milford, CT and then at Bethel Healthcare in Bethel, CT until she retired in 2014. At her 75th High School Reunion in 2015 she received a Lifetime Achievement Award recognizing that she was a woman ahead of her time, earning a degree, becoming a business owner and making a successful career change.
Petie was a passionate and avid gardener; planning gardens and planting and growing flowers, vegetables, shrubs and trees. She was a caregiver to everyone and a great conversationalist; she never met a stranger.
She is survived by her children; Daniel McNair (Beatrice) of Brookfield, CT, Barbara McNair Odeh (Nemat) of Woodbury, CT, Stephen McNair (Suzanne) of Etowah, TN, Becky Benton (Charles) of Nobleboro, ME, and Bryan McNair (Kathleen) of Bethel, CT, her grandchildren; Dawn, Billy, Donald, Peter, Lindsay, Stephen, Stephanie, Margaret, Krystin, Anders, Ryan, Brittany, Kyle and Austin, her greatgrandchildren; Danielle, Dana, Allyssa, Noah, Michael, Blake, Bennoch, Justin, Thomas, & Grace and her special nieces, Deanna, Kathy, Sandra, Janice and nephews, Tommy, Philip, Mark, Ernie and Dale.
Eleanor was predeceased by her husband in 1993 as well as by her sister, Neva Pauline (Pat) Thomas, and her brother, Louis E. Spangler Jr.
Visitation will be held at Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Avenue, Brewster, NY from 4:30pm-8pm on Wednesday, March 17. Condolences for the family may be left on Petie’s webpage at Beecherfuneralhome.com. Donations may be made in Eleanor’s memory to your charity of choice.
