Gaetano Guy Virtuoso


Gaetano Guy Virtuoso passed away surrounded by his loving family on October 22, 2019, at Putnam Hospital Center.

Gaetano was born in the Bronx, NY on August 15, 1945, to Dominick and Matilda (Labruzzo) Virtuoso. Guy graduated from Sleepy Hollow High School and three years later, he entered the Navy on October 3, 1963, where he was as a Machinist Mate 2nd class, working the engine room on the USS Kankakee Kennebec-Class Fleet Oiler. For his service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Honorably Discharged from active duty on September 29, 1967. On July 12, 1980, Guy married the love of his life, Barbara A. Bass. Together they created a family with six wonderful children. Guy worked as a Parts Manager a Big Dee Volvo in White Plains until he retired in May 2011.

His greatest love in life was his family. He loved spending time with them, especially his fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandson, all of which gave him endless pride and happiness. Next to being with family, Guy enjoyed boating with his family. He was a member of the Cold Spring Boat Club and they spent many hours cruising on the Hudson River. One of Guy’s biggest passions was being a member of the New England Air Museum in East Grandby, CT. He also enjoyed the collecting and selling of WWII vintage Aircraft, Ships and other rare collectibles.

Guy had a big heart and loved welcoming friends and family to his home to break bread and enjoy each other’s company. He enjoyed the simple things in life, Guy loved spending nights with his wife Barbara and their friends frequenting the local movie theaters, and the Putnam Plaza’s “Greek Village” for family style dining. On July 12, 2019, Guy and Barbara enjoyed their 39th Wedding Anniversary, and their love had seemingly never missed a beat.

Guy is s is survived by his devoted wife of 39 years Barbara, and their six children, Dominic Virtuoso, Danny Virtuoso, Dawn Alexander, Philip McSpedon, George McSpedon and Michael McSpedon. His fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. Several nieces and nephews that always held a special place in his heart also survive him. Guy is the son of the late Dominick and Matilda (Labrusso) Virtuoso and was most recently predeceased by his loving sister, Sarah Gross on May 7, 2019.

A visitation was held at Cargain Funeral Homes Inc., 10 Fowler Avenue, Carmel, NY 10512 on Thursday, October 24, 2019, between the hours of 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Prayer service was held during the visitation at 7:30 PM, followed by US Military Honors at Cargain Funeral Home in, Carmel, NY. A private cremation took place the following day.
