H. Edward Vreeland


H. Edward Vreeland, a 60-year resident of Brewster, NY, died peacefully at Waterview Hills Nursing Home on Wednesday, April 24, 2019. He was 83 years old.

Born on January 16, 1936, in Danbury, CT son of the late Edward F. and Helena (Burke) Vreeland. Ed graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Katonah, NY and received his bachelor’s degree from Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.

On November 22, 1958, he married the love of his life Patricia Maher at Holy Innocents Church, Pleasantville, NY.

Ed was an educator with John F. Kennedy High School in Somers, NY for many years. He was a basketball coach for 25 years with Kennedy High School. Ed also had a love of baseball, as he was drafted out of college and played professionally for the Washington Senators for a year before starting a family. He later worked in Real Estate and for the Town of Southeast.

He was an avid golfer and NY Yankee fan. Ed enjoyed cooking for his family and friends. He was a member of the Brewster Chamber of Commerce and the director of Southeast Recreation.

Besides his wife Patricia of 61 years, Ed is survived by his six children; Richard Vreeland of Hyde Park, NY, Carole (Angelo) Sblendorio of Poughquag, NY, Kerri Iossa of Brewster, NY, Edward F. Vreeland of Patterson, NY, Michele Vreeland of Purdys, NY and Margaret (Jay) Perry of Burlington, CT; his 9 grandchildren; Andrew, Ryan, Christen, Katherine, Giovanna, Brendan, Elizabeth, Liam and Jacquelyn; and his brother Peter (Annemarie) Vreeland of Warren, PA. Ed was predeceased by his son-in-law Giuseppe Iossa in 1995.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday, April 29, 2019, 10:30 am at St. James ‘The Apostle’ Church, Carmel, NY. A private cremation followed the mass. Friends called at the Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Avenue, Brewster on Sunday, April 28, 2019, from 2pm-6pm. www.Beecherfuneralhome.com
