Born Helen Marie Pitassy on October 14th, 1932, in New York City to Julia and Julius Pitassy of the Bronx, New York, Helen attended P.S.80, the Academy of Mount Saint Ursula, and the College of Mount Saint Vincent. She graduated Mount Saint Vincent with a Bachelor of Arts degree and later obtained a Master of Library Science degree from Saint John’s University. Helen also attended Fordham Law School.
Helen married Donald Leo York in 1958 in New York City, and shortly thereafter moved to Yonkers, New York and raised their two sons Christopher and Douglas. She served on the Board of the Westchester County and New York State Library system advocating tirelessly for library funding for students.
More than an academic, Helen enjoyed music, theatre, and home improvement projects, never afraid to wield a hammer or paintbrush. Like her husband and two sons, Helen enjoyed the acceleration of a fast car and the ruggedness of the five Jeeps she owned in her lifetime. She excelled in all she put her mind to from piloting a boat through the tricky waters around Manhattan to being a crack shot at the shooting range.
In addition to her sons Christopher of Brewster, New York, and Douglas of North Stamford, Connecticut. Helen is survived by Christopher’s wife and beloved daughter in law, Julie Snow York, and Douglas’ husband Edward Guyer. In addition, Helen leaves her grandchildren, William and Elizabeth, children of Christopher and Julie. Her husband Donald and her siblings Reginald, Caesar, and Vivian predeceased Helen.
