The Honorable Howard F. Stockfield of Mahopac, New York, age 70, died peacefully surrounded by his family on November 19 in Valhalla, NY from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

He is survived by his beloved wife of fifteen years, Joan; five children, Jodi Mancusi and her husband James, Rick Stockfield and his wife Mindy, Dan Stockfield and his wife Amy, Jennifer Galluzzo and her husband David, and Alison Stallings and her husband Gary; and eleven grandchildren: Tyler, Kayla, Nicholas, Shane, Cyan, Evan, Alaina, Grayden, Calvin, Garrett and Gabriella; and a brother, Robert of Baltimore, Maryland. He was predeceased by his father, William Stockfield, and mother, Freida Ettin.

Judge Stockfield was born on June 27, 1941 in Yonkers. He was dedicated to the legal profession and began his career working for the IRS. He then opened his own practice in Carmel, in 1971, soon thereafter opening the law firm of Stockfield & Fixler. He served as Town Justice of Carmel for twelve years. In 1987 he joined Michael Barile and Tommy Boniello as a partner at LynLil Associates in Mahopac.

On his most important case in 1983, he represented a client who had injured her back in a grocery store. After receiving an adverse ruling from the lower courts, he appealed the decision and had it reversed in the appellate division. Stockfield later married the client, Joan Newman. They married on December 26, 1997, after fifteen years of dating and a 28-hour engagement.

When he wasn’t spending time with his children and grandchildren, Howard was an avid traveler, visiting over eighty countries (six continents) with his wife. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Howard Stockfield’s name to the following organizations: Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, pulmonaryfibrosis.org; Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis, coalitionforpf.org.

Visiting will be held on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home, 692 US Route 6, Mahopac. Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with interment to follow at Amawalk Hill Cemetery, Amawalk, NY.
