John F. Felton, of Montrose, NY, formerly of Somers, NY, died peacefully on January 18, 2020, at the NYS Veterans Home at Montrose. He was 88 years old.
Born on April 17, 1931, in New York City, NY, son of the late Harold and Catherine (O’Brien) Felton. He graduated from Harem High School in Bronx, NY, went to Bowling Green State University in Ohio on a swimming scholarship, and received his bachelor’s degree in 1953.
Following graduation, he honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed throughout Europe with his lifelong friend, Don DeVaughn in counter-intelligence. After being discharged, he earned a law degree from St. John’s University.
On October 10th, 1959, he married the love of his life, Betty Ann Gill, in Brooklyn, NY. Betty predeceased John on October 6, 1988.
John was an attorney at law with his own practice in Manhattan for many years before retiring. He was a voracious reader of all things history, but in particular, W.W. II and the Civil War. He was a great conversationalist and storyteller, keeper of arcane facts, but mostly a listener who was interested in what you had to say. His grandchildren meant the world to him.
He loved to attend their sporting events and spend time regaling them with his stories. He was so proud to be able to attend some of his grandchildrens’ college graduations.
John also had a soft spot for animals, especially Gizmo and Jerry, the family dogs, and the many he had over his life.
Mr. Felton is survived by his loving children; Laura Brooks and her husband Tom of Needham, MA, Brian Felton and his wife Debra of Brewster, NY, Craig Felton and his wife Barbara of Poughkeepsie, NY and Lisa Walsh and her husband Edward of Mahopac, NY, his 8 grandchildren; Tommy & Emily Brooks, Michael & Jessica Felton, Catherine, Elizabeth, Barbara & Gabrielle Felton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday January 22, 2020, at 10am at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, Brewster, NY. Interment will follow the next day at Calverton National Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday January 21, 2020, from 4pm-7pm at Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Avenue, Brewster, NY.
