John Martinez passed away peacefully on September 30th, 2017 at the age of 87. John, known by his loved ones as “Jackie or Poppers” was born in Kent Cliffs, NY to John + Ella Martinez. He served his country proudly while serving in Germany in the early 1950’s as a driver of tank transporters, and when John returned home he married the love of his life Ethel Gaines on October 11th, 1953. They enjoyed square dancing and would travel the East Coast with friends looking for dancing events.

John worked as an operating engineer for Local 137 for many years and even spent time in Nigeria, Africa working on land clearing projects. A dedicated father, John joined the Cub Scouts as a Scout leader of Pack 1 in the 60’s and then moved over to Boy Scouts as Scout leader for Troop 1. John loved traveling and enjoyed taking his family for weekend get a ways in their travel camper.

John retired in the early 90’s and moved South with Ethel and settled down in Nettles Island, Florida. John enjoyed playing golf with his buddies, sitting around the campfire telling stories and sharing laughs with friends and family.

John is survived by his wife Ethel, sons Mark and Scott, daughter Michele and many grand and great grandchildren. “Poppers – you were the best person we ever knew, stay Pure and we will see you when we’re looking at you, Love ya!!”
