Mary Zywotchenko (nee Hawraniak) passed away February 8th, 2015. She was born March 21, 1945, in Schopfenhof, Germany, just as the allies were marching toward Berlin in the waning days of WW II, to Ukrainian parents working as forced laborers. They emigrated as displaced persons to the U.S. in Maryland, in 1949, and then settled in Yonkers in 1950. Mary attended Yonkers Schools and graduated from Yonkers H.S. in 1963. She studied dance most of her young life, especially tap, and was very proud to have auditioned to be a Rockette. She worked as a secretary/administrative assistant at IBM until she married the love of her life, Alexander Zywotchenko, in 1965. They moved to Putnam Valley, NY, where they began their family and where she fostered her love of nature and animals and lived for the rest of her life.
She leaves behind three adoring children, Tanya (Charles Faillace Jr.), Sonia (Nick Robinson) and Alex (Marialisa Zywotchenko), and four grandchildren, Alex and Eve Robinson (ages 9 and 6), Joseph Coker Walton and Alexander Adam Zywotchenko Jr. (Ages 5 and 2). She is also survived by her brother, Michael Havraniak.
She will forever be remembered for her boundless love and devotion to her family, her profound kindness, vibrant and unique spirit, unwavering faith and her great strength and bravery.
A wake was held on Friday, February 13, from 4-8 pm, at Cargain Funeral Home, 418 Route 6, Mahopac, NY (845)628-5655. A Divine Liturgy was held on Saturday, February 14, at 10:30 am at St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church, 21 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY, with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 114 Sprain Road, Yonkers, NY.
