It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Thomas Russell (Russ) Lavan, age 84, of Carmel, NY on December 18, 2020.
Russ was born on August 21, 1936, in The Bronx, NY to Thomas and Margaret (Lehanka) Lavan. Russ grew up in Highbridge, attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and Cardinal Hayes High School. Russ served in the Army National Guard and graduated from Manhattan College.
Russ married the love of his life, Patricia (O’Byrne), on October 27, 1962, and the two were blessed with four children.
Russ worked for IBM for 30 years. In 1965, he was relocated to the Armonk, NY campus and the family moved to Carmel, NY. Russ was an active member of the Carmel community, including the Volunteer Ambulance Corps, St. James Parents’ Guild, Emerald Association, and as a charter member of the local council of the Knights of Columbus. His contributions were recognized over the years by being selected as Grand Marshall of the 35th Annual Northern Westchester & Putnam St. Patrick’s Day parade. In addition to receiving numerous other Knights of Columbus awards, he was also honored as the Emerald Association’s member of the year (with Pat). As many know – Russ was a lifelong Giants fan, through thick and thin.
Russ is survived by his wife Pat Lavan of Carmel, NY; his children, Patti Horvath and her husband Dean, Jeanne Lavan, Eileen Stone and her husband Steve, and Russell Lavan; as well as eight grandchildren: Liam, Jack, Logan, Paige, Lauren, Jordan, Jenna, and Audrey. He also leaves behind his brother Edward Lavan. Russ is predeceased by his brother Donald along with his parents.
In addition to his immediate and extended family, he made many friends throughout his life and held those friends dear, keeping in touch with even his childhood friends until his passing. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
The family will not hold a public visitation at this time, but plans to hold a Memorial Service this summer. A Mass to honor and celebrate Russ’ life was held at 10 A.M. on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at St. James the Apostle Church in Carmel, NY. Cremation was private.
