William J. Mayer




 

 

William J. Mayer passed away peacefully April 27, 2017 at the Presbyterian Senior Care Center in Washington PA. Born July 10, 1944, in Colonie NY, he was the son of the late Mildred and Emil Mayer. He is survived by his brother George Mayer and sister-in-law Judy Mayer.

Bill was a much beloved member of the Phillipstown community. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Phillipstown and served the church in many capacities, several terms as elder and clerk of session, as well as serving the Presbytery of the Hudson River as Chair of the committee of Preparation for the Ministry and Moderator of the Presbytery. He will be remembered in that community for his warmth, generosity, humor, and dedication to the church.

He was a dedicated scholar and teacher, a long time teacher in the Classics Department at Hunter College in NYC, and a founder of the MA in Teaching Latin Program at the college. He took a leadership role in many classics organizations, the Classical Association of New York State, The Classical Association of the Atlantic States, and the American Classical League. He was awarded a Meritus award for his contributions to the profession, and upon retirement was given an Ovatio, an award and a ceremony marking not only his contributions to the profession, but the strong personal impact he had on a generation of students and colleagues.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 15, 11AM, at the First Presbyterian Church of Phillipstown, 10 Academy St. Cold Spring NY.
